“Repent and believe in the Gospel” - With these words we are signed today with ashes, marking the beginning of the season of Lent. Lent comes from the Germanic word “lencten”, which means springtime. Why is the Lenten season calling us to the wilderness/desert - dry, arid, almost no vegetation is found. How can spring happen in the wilderness? There seems to be a contradiction.

If Lent is supposed to be the springtime of the soul, the seed of the Gospel can only bloom if we are able to center ourselves back to the essentials and fundamentals. God’s word needs focus, total attention, less distractions. The best place for that is the wilderness, where we are stripped of the usual conveniences – no competing gadgets, no internet, no television, no cellphones, meaning no distractions. Just you and God! In our “alone” time with God, we also realize the things that we have to give up (repent) in order to turn to the Gospel. Are you ready to enter into the desert and pursue the riches hidden in Christ and give up the passing wealth that the world pursues? Only then the desert will bloom and spring be realized. – Fr. “Arrepiéntete y cree en el Evangelio”- Con estas palabras hoy somos marcados con las cenizas, marcando el comienzo de la Cuaresma. La palabra cuaresma que quiere decir “cuarenta” proviene también del alemán “lencten”, que quiere decir primavera. Por qué la Cuaresma nos llama al desierto-  seco y con poca vegetación. ¿Cómo se puede diferenciar la primavera a la mitad del desierto? Parece como si fuera una contradicción.
Si la Cuaresma se supone que debe ser la primavera del alma, la semilla del Evangelio solo puede florecer si somos capaces de centrarnos hacia lo esencial y fundamental. Las palabras del Señor deben ser el enfoque, tener nuestra total atención, con menos distracciones. El mejor lugar para esto es el desierto, donde somos arrebatados de las comodidades diarias--- sin aparatos electrónicos, sin internet, sin televisión, sin celulares, es decir sin distracciones. ¡Solo Dios y tú! En nuestro tiempo “solos” con Dios, es cuando nos damos cuenta de las cosas a las que hay que renunciar “o arrepentirnos” para poder volver a Él. ¿Estás listo para entrar en el desierto y perseguir la riqueza escondida en Cristo y renunciar a la riqueza que el mundo persigue? Sólo entonces el desierto florecerá y la primavera será visible en el desierto.
