This second Sunday of Advent, we focus on the topic of peace. A promise is made in our readings this Sunday, that as we prepare for the Lord, every valley shall be filled, age-old depths and gorges will be filled, the rough ways will be made smooth, and the winding roads shall be made straight. I can’t help but read these passages and think, what are the valleys, lofty mountains, winding roads, and rough paths in my life? What am I currently dealing with that makes it difficult for me to prepare for the Lord and truly obtain deep peace from God’s unconditional love for me? For me, my never ending to-do list is a constant lofty mountain I face. Broken relationships with some family members is a rough path, discerning my vocation is a winding road, and moments of spiritual desolation are valleys. Christ promises to take care of his children, to provide us with a spirit of peace- peace in not always being able to finish our to-do list, peace in not being able to please everyone, peace in not having all the answers, peace in living within a troubled family, culture, and society, peace in the salvation and love only He provides. How can you invite God into your valleys mountains, roads, and paths during this Advent season, and welcome His peace? Amanda Jewett
