Lent: A Desert Experience 2/18

A few years ago, I visited a friend who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. After about a day, we decided to take a road trip to visit another friend in Omaha, Nebraska. As we drove through Wyoming in his 1996 Grand Jeep Cherokee, on a 96 degree hot summer afternoon, we came to a long stretch of land between Wyoming and Nebraska that I can only describe as a desert. Before we left for this trip, my friend was confident that his old car was good to go, but as we drove through this desert, I heard my friend say to himself in a whisper: “I hope nothing happens to this car.” Hearing these words heightened my consciousness of how vulnerable we will be if anything happens to the car.

We learn from today’s gospel that Jesus spent forty days in the desert where he was not only vulnerable to nature but also experienced physical human weakness. He intentionally went into the desert in order to prepare himself for his public ministry. These 40 days of Lent offer us a desert experience opportunity where we can get in touch with and work on at least one human weakness.

Cuaresma: una experiencia en el desierto 2/18

Hace unos años, visité a un amigo que vive en Salt Lake City, Utah. Después de aproximadamente un día, decidimos hacer un viaje por carretera para visitar a otro amigo en Omaha, Nebraska. Mientras conducíamos a través de Wyoming en su Grand Jeep Cherokee 1996, en una calurosa tarde de verano de 96 grados, llegamos a un largo tramo de tierra entre Wyoming y Nebraska que solo puedo describir como un desierto. Antes de partir para este viaje, mi amigo estaba seguro de que su viejo automóvil era bueno para llevarnos, pero mientras conducíamos por este desierto, escuché a mi amigo decirse en un susurro: "Espero que no le pase nada a este automóvil". Estas palabras aumentaron mi conciencia de lo vulnerables que estaríamos si algo le sucede al automóvil.

.Aprendemos del evangelio de hoy que Jesús pasó cuarenta días en el desierto, donde no solo era vulnerable a la naturaleza sino que también experimentaba debilidad física humana. Intencionalmente fue al desierto para prepararse para su ministerio público. Estos 40 días de Cuaresma nos ofrecen una oportunidad de experiencia en el desierto donde podemos enfrentarnos y trabajar en al menos una debilidad humana
